The Spring of Nile


Exodus 2:1-10
Moses is Born
Genesis Chapter 46 tells us that Jacob and his sons brought their families from Canaan to Egypt in order to escape from the famine. They joined with Joseph who was in Egypt and had become very powerful there, and they all settled down in Egypt. In all, Jacob had seventy descendants in Egypt.
God kept His covenant promise to Abraham by blessing him with many descendants. By this time, from the start of the book Exodus, God multiplied the Israelites greatly, making them extremely powerful and filling the land of Egypt (Exodus 1:6).
The long sojourn of Israelites in Egypt actually proved true the prophetic word given to Abraham by God about Israel’s future, in Genesis 15:13—16, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years. Until the sin of the Canaanites had come to its full fruition then only the Israelites would enter Canaan.”
Many years and generations had passed long after Joseph died, and eventually, a new Egyptian king, Pharaoh had come to power who knew nothing about Joseph or what he had done. 
He was intimidated by the Israelites' numbers and power. He said to his people, “Look, the people of Israel now outnumber us and are stronger than we are.  We must make a plan to keep them from growing even more. If we don’t, and if war breaks out, they will join our enemies and fight against us. Then they will escape from the country.” (1:9-10)
So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labour, and they built store cities for Pharaoh. But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread.
Then Pharaoh ordered the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Phuah, “When you help the Hebrew women in child birth and observe them on the delivery stool, if it is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.” (1: 15-16)
The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live. Then Pharaoh summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?”
The midwives answered Pharaoh, “Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive.”
Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: “Every boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.” (1:22)
About this time, there was a couple Amram and Jochebed from the tribe of Levi. They already had two children: Miriam and Aaron. Jochebed became pregnant again and gave birth to a son.
She saw that he was “good” and kept him hidden for three months until she could no longer hide him anymore. She really did not know what to do next to keep the baby safe!
So, she got a basket made of papyrus reeds and waterproofed it with tar and pitch. She put the baby in the basket and laid it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile River – ironically, just as Pharaoh had decreed (1:22).
This was a risky thing to do, to let the basket flow into the sea, either the Egyptians could find the baby inside the box, or the waters could have drowned the baby. However, the mother had done her part, now she had to ‘let go the child’, trusting the providence of God.
Wonderfully her son was ‘let go’ into the hands of God. God used her courageous act to place her son in the house of Pharaoh!
Moses’ mother, Jochebed first put the baby into a “basket” then only cast it into the Nile.
‘Basket’ has the same root word with Noah’s ‘ark’. This recalls the story of God’s salvation of Noah in the days of the Flood. God put Noah’s family in the ark to protect them from the flood and then a re-creation began.
Moses too, in the ‘basket’ rafting in Nile was not overcome by evil forces of anti-creation; and eventually a holy nation would be created!
Miriam stood at a distance, waiting to see what would happen to baby Moses.  Soon Pharaoh’s daughter came down to bathe in the river. When the princess saw the basket among the reeds, she sent her maid to get it for her. 
When the princess opened it, she saw the baby. The little boy was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This must be one of the Hebrew children,” she said.
Then Miriam approached the princess and said, “Should I go and find one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?” she asked.  “Yes, please do!” the princess replied.
So, the girl went and called the baby’s mother. “Take this baby and nurse him for me,” the princess told the baby’s mother. “I will pay you for your help.” So, the woman took her baby home and nursed him.
God used the baby’s tears to control the heart of a powerful princess, and used Miriam’s words to arrange for the baby’s mother to raise the boy and got paid for it! The princess could be pretending to be ignorant because her maternal instincts compelled her to rescue the child and care for him.
Moses’ mother’s faith, Miriam’s courage and wits to act when opportunity arose, the princess’s compassionate heart; all came together to bring about ‘civil disobedience’ against Pharaoh’s decree, to resist evil and save life.
Later when the boy became older, his mother brought him back to Pharaoh’s daughter. The princess named him Moses, for she explained, “I lifted him out of the water.”
The young Moses received nurturing from the babysitter who was also his biological mother. This bond had impacted him very much that he would grow up to identify with his fellow Israelites plight.
Moses also acquired superior education, military operations and administration in the royal court. Such learning had equipped Moses to be a leader in judging and leading Israelites in the future.
For Moses, the glory and wealth of the palace was also a temptation. He could rightfully claim the status of Prince of Egypt and be complacent of it. However, he overcame the temptation. At the age of forty he gave up the royal status to join his fellow Israelites as their deliverer.
God Works Wonder to Overcome the Devil’s Snare
The infant narrative of Moses is filled with ironies and contrasts: Moses' mother finally obeyed Pharaoh’s decree and placed Moses in the waters of Nile, but the Nile water instead had secured the baby’s life.
Pharaoh ordered the killing of males but God used females to revolt against Pharaoh and saved a vulnerable baby boy. This baby boy would one day deliver the Israelites out of the Egyptian tyranny.
It was Pharaoh's own daughter who adopted Moses as her own son. She nurtured and equipped him in the palace and in the civil service. The princess listened to the words of Israelite women, to let them babysit the child with wages paid.
These ironies tell us the author’s clear enough emphasis: God was at work in these events to bring about His plan to bless the seed of Abraham, and no one, not even the great power of the gentile nations, can stand in His way.
Our God is awesome, wonderful and faithful; He is in control regardless of how vulnerable and risky the situation may be.
God Takes Risk in Using the Vulnerable People
God used three vulnerable women to launch a civil disobedience against Pharaoh, to save another vulnerable baby. Pharaoh’s daughter was one of these three women. This vulnerable baby grew up one day to participate in God’s plan of delivering His people out of Egypt.
God often uses the weakest things to defeat the mightiest enemies.
Jeremiah 9:23, “Thus says the LORD: ‘Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches,’”
1Corinthians 1: 25-29, “For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly stands, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth, but God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.”
These three women and the baby’s tears were God’s first weapons in His war against Egypt.
Moses was a ‘type’ for Jesus Christ. Jesus was born in a godly family, suffered a death threat from King Herod, and was miraculously saved. He was the Son of God in heaven, humbled Himself to be born as son of man, and died on the cross to redeem sinners from the devil’s oppression, to be born again as God’s people.
Application
When evil dominates and crisis escalates, and there seems to be no way out; we still have our hope in God. To God nothing is impossible. God’s works are elusive and risky in nature. He can fire the shots alone, but many a time, he calls us to partner with Him to bring about changes.
Look for ways to act against evil. Be alert for the opportunities God gives you, and take full advantage of them. We may be vulnerable and frustrated by how little we can do when faced with evil or human predicament.
Have faith in God! God can use your effort; however small it seems to bring about great deliverance.
Oftentimes we are overwhelmed by lavish thoughts and huge comprehensive plans, so much so that God is pushed to the margin. To break free from dilemmas of life, we must ‘let go and let God’, to trust that He will take care of the rest. He will not fail us!
Even as darkness pervades the atmosphere, by faith we recognise that God is in control. History is held in His hands. History is His Story!
We will be surprised that God’s salvation starts from a vulnerable baby; a vulnerable beginning! Now where do you want to start from?
Let’s arise to make changes now even though the situation seems risky, vulnerable and uncertain.
We are to make changes in career, family, church ministry and the community; so that new order is made, gospel works be multiplied, new leaders be borne; tears be turned into joy, life be breaking through hurdles, church be undergoing transformation, corrupted practises be condemned and halted…...

The Power of the Gospel in Community


The Infant and the Rich Officer
Luke 18:15-30
Two thousand years ago during Jesus’ time, the Jews were waiting for the kingdom of God to come in the period so-called “the age to come”. God was going to send the “Messiah” to lead the Israelites against all opposing powers.
Then, God would personally come to rule Israel, and all the nations of the earth would worship God and have great respect for Israel. And everything would be renewed. There would not be any death, pain, suffering and evil. God would be with his people.
Anyone who had the privilege to live in this Kingdom was said to have “eternal life” – in Greek, “the life of the age to come”.
In Luke 17:20-21, it is recorded that some Pharisees came and asked Jesus, “When is the kingdom of God coming?”
Jesus answered, “the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”
Jesus intended to tell them that the kingdom of God had already started and they were already in the “end time”.
In Chapter 18, Jesus continued by telling a parable of a widow and a judge, and the prayer of the tax collector and the Pharisee. Both parables are to show that the kingdom of God is opened for the weak, unworthy and humble.
When the gospel is spread, the power of the gospel will make the weak strong, raise the humble, and the kingdom of God will prevail over this broken and sorrowful world.
Luke 18:15 onwards, Jesus continued to reveal how God’s people can embrace or participate in the coming of the kingdom of God.
The Power of the Gospel Changes Lives
In chapter 18 verse 15-17, it is recorded that someone brought infants to Jesus, asking Him to touch them. When Jesus’ disciples rebuked them, Jesus asked them to come over, saying, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”
Luke used “infants”, not to say that people should be humble, but to emphasize that we are to be weak and helpless like a baby. A baby suckling in the mother’s lap will grasp tightly onto the mother, looking into the mother’s eyes and smile while learning how to speak. The baby is weak and helpless. He has no power on his own. He has to totally rely on the mother.
Luke emphasized that entering the kingdom of God is purely by God’s grace. We cannot enter the kingdom of God through our own works or moral accomplishments for we are weak and helpless in that respect.
Verses 18-23 continues to say:
A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
“Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honour your father and mother.’”
“All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.
When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” (verses 24-25)
Jesus did not hate wealthy people. Instead, he was judging people who “find security outside of God”, like securities in wealth, religious piety, status, or how much they served; their knowledge, love, career and achievements. These “external things” had become their “functional saviour”, making them felt as if they wouldn’t live happy lives without these external things.
Consolidating information from Matthew and Mark, we know that this ruler was a young man. So, he was young, wealthy and high ranking. But he did not feel that his life was perfect even when he was blessed in the eyes of everyone else. He also doubted whether he was saved. That was why he came to Jesus.
He held Jesus in high esteem and called him a good teacher. However, he eventually rejected Jesus’ call because he could not put down his wealth. His wealth became the “idols”, the so-called “securities” in his life, causing him to be kept away from the true saviour.
Wealth, status, knowledge, love and career and achievements are all good things. Hunger and pursuing after these things are not wrong, but if we make these things as our ultimate goal in life and replace the true saviour, we have fallen into the deception of the devil.
Timothy Keller called these things “counterfeit God”. They cannot forgive sins, cannot fulfil the inner desires of the heart, cannot give purpose and meaning to life. Instead, people, more often than not, are enslaved by them.
When we think we can only be happy if we have these good external things, we will feel extremely anxious when anything happens that threaten our grasp of these things. If someone stopped us from obtaining these things, we would be very furious. If you fail to achieve these things, the world would not forgive you and you would not forgive yourself.
If you indeed do obtain these things one day, they would not be able to give you the ultimate satisfaction that you were hoping for. Not only that, it might even increase the emptiness in your heart. No wonder many successful people that we look up to fall into depression and commit suicide during the highest peak of their human life.
So then, how do we receive God’s kingdom and live a blessed and meaningful life? The answer is to admit that we are weak and helpless like a baby, to put down the idols in our lives and hold on to the true saviour of our life – Jesus.
Jesus is the eternal Son of God of the Holy Trinity. He is wealthy and majestic. He has endless glory, fullness, love and joy, but He willingly relinquished everything to become poor and died on the cross. He bore the punishment for sins on our behalf on the cross in order that we may live. He saves us, loves us, and gives us fullness of life.
Jesus’ saving grace is free and yet at the same time the most expensive. It is not something that we can obtain by ourselves. This Jesus who gave away everything for you to save you is calling you today to put down everything you have, to become weak and helpless like a baby, to only depend on Him, to follow him and to be one with Him.
With Jesus at the centre of our lives, all these external things would not affect us anymore. They would not cause us to be consumed by bitterness, anger and depression. They would not cause our lives to be like a roller coaster, going through ups and downs in the events of loss or gain.
Jesus is the only saviour; you will be satisfied when you get Him. In the uncertainties of life, adversities and good times, Jesus will be the rock of your life. Even if you disappoint Him in certain aspects of your lives, He will forgive you.
Today, are you going after “many idols” in your life and chained by sin? Is your life filled with joy, peace, satisfaction, prayer and gratitude? Or are you lost, frustrated, empty, bitter and suffering?
Come and kneel before the cross of Jesus and ponder His sacrificial love for you. Live in Christ and continue to abide with Him through reading the word and praying every day, attending Sunday worship and small groups. Jesus promised that you will be filled with the Holy Spirit, giving you rest, joy and satisfaction, helping you to live a life away from sin and live to the fullest.
The Power of the Gospel Changes the World
In verse 28-30, Peter tells Jesus, “We have left all we had to follow you!”
“Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.”
God’s kingdom in “the age to come” has already begun! We, those who follow Jesus and truly believe and depend on Jesus, should rely on the power of the Holy Spirit to love God and love others as we love ourselves.
We need to live a life of fellowship with others with the brand new values of this kingdom of God, and build for the kingdom of God while we are living on this earth. The old world values and institutions has already been overturned; the disciples of Jesus, that is the church, already has a new home, new family members.
We should accept and forgive one another, serve and love one another, living a selfless life and enjoy our new fellowship together. We can live in “the age to come”, dwelling in the goodness of the kingdom of God on this earth today. The people of the world will be attracted to the kingdom of God when they see it, and they would want to join us, to live in the kingdom of God on this earth.
Some people might disagree and say that this kind of selfless, full of love, righteous, mutually beneficial life will never happen. Socialism and communism had tried to build a similar utopia, but all have failed. Or, some might say that this church will not be able to do it, some other church however might be successful.
We are all weak and helpless people. But the power of the gospel can change everything! The power of the gospel is the “dynamite” of the kingdom of God, and is able to change the lives of people and overturn the status quo of the world.
The coming of the Holy Spirit heals the brokenness of our society, refreshing us, giving us strength to overcome our weakness. The Holy Spirit will also empower us with various spiritual gifts in order that we may build a unified body of Christ to serve and do the works that God has called us to do.
We should not doubt the power of the gospel and the works of the Holy Spirit. Instead, we should ask ourselves: when the kingdom of God come upon the new earth, where will we be? Are we part of the new kingdom, still faithfully holding on to God and building for this kingdom?
Will we be as the widow in Jesus’ parable, steadfastly fighting for the righteousness of the kingdom of God to come? Jesus said, “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” (18:8)
Application
Today, are you like a baby, holding on to Jesus tightly, willing to let go of things that caused you to be far from God, such as bad habits, sins that are hiding in the dark, or those things that give you a false sense of security?
Today, you might have lost your job or your business might be at a loss. You might lose the chance to further your studies or the love of your life or affirmation from people around you. You do not need to be afraid, frustrated, depressed or angry, because you still have Jesus with you!
With Jesus in our lives, we have hope! Through the reading of God’s word, praying and serving God, we will continue to be close with God and continue to be in Christ. He will lead you through the valley of death because his grace is sufficient for you. Christ is enough!
The faithful people have gone through a long period of time, some have declined, some had gone through difficult times. Some want to stay in the comfort zone, some are afraid that our resources are not enough and dare not take the step out to try new things, to try new ministries for God.
God says that it is not by our strength, not by our talents, but by the power of the Holy Spirit.
We should do our part by equipping ourselves, then God will come and do the rest where we lack. We need to accept and forgive one another, treating each other with love and grace. We should be united and together spread the gospel to the non-believers, providing care to the community and bring substantial benefits to the community.
The power of the gospel is able to change lives and turning over the world around us, which is beyond our imagination!

与邪恶对峙



启示录12—14
胜负已定的争战
启示录12是整本书的转折点。从这里开始,作者清楚透露撒但魔鬼和他的手下是所有冲突和苦难的源头,但他们已经被基督击败了。他们现在只是垂死挣扎,很快就会被完全消灭。
12描述三个角色怀孕的妇人临产、生下男婴、大红龙威胁要吞噬婴孩。大红龙是古蛇、魔鬼撒但;怀孕妇人象征一个神的群体的开始;婴孩是耶稣弥赛亚。
婴孩长大之后会击败魔鬼,并且管理万国。大红龙要杀害妇人及其儿子,但神保守及拯救了这妇人和婴孩。大红龙就迫害这妇人其余的子女。这说明了弥赛亚群体的成员将卷入斗争中。
魔鬼是邪恶和诱惑的总和。他是悖逆神,也是迷惑人背叛神的力量。魔鬼的势力不单是属灵的,也呈现于现实社会的经济和政治体制中。魔鬼使用威逼利诱的手段来叫神的儿女和世人转向跟从他。这也是龙要吞吃妇人的孩子的意思。
神的子民若是忠心于神,就无法避免恶者的攻击。但是撒但的力量和权势是短暂有限的(三年半作为象征年月),迟早会崩溃,因为撒但已经被从死里复活,又高升了的基督击败了。
基督的宝血买赎了列国的人,使他们成为神的子民。这弥赛亚群体必定也会胜过撒但,乃是依靠羔羊的血和他们自己所见证的道福音。弥赛亚群体就是教会神的子民。这群人应当跟从基督的足迹,就是借受苦、坚忍和作见证来赢得胜利。
魔鬼和他的手下已经从天上掉下来。天上没有他们的地方,意味着地上无论发生什么事,魔鬼已经被击败,神掌权。地上没有任何事可以隔绝基督与子民的爱,包括苦难和逼迫。
神借着耶稣基督而达成的救赎,是透过受苦成就的。这就为各种形式的苦难提供了意义。这不是说苦难将会变成好过些,而是说神并非不晓得大地众生的苦痛。神透过苦难与人相遇。
现在我们在魔鬼的威逼利诱面前不可退让。我们当忍耐,唯独忠心服侍和敬拜神。今生所有的荣誉或苦难都是短暂有限的(三年半)。我们唯独渴慕在永恒里与基督同在。
13揭示魔鬼大红龙还有两个盟友:海兽、地上的兽。他们组成了邪恶的三位一体,对照神圣的三位一体真神。他们僭越神的荣耀,领受神才配得的崇拜。
海兽代表罗马帝国逼迫信徒的势力(军事武力和政治权势)。他是敌基督或假基督,代号666。海兽其七头中受伤却被医好的一头所反映的,反映盛行于第一世纪末的『尼录复生回归』的传说;或者尼录的残暴往后重现在多米田。这两位都是恶名昭彰,逼迫基督徒的罗马王。
其实魔鬼与他的同盟就是喜欢僭越神的荣耀。这种“受伤却被医好”也是在呼应基督从死里复活。作者强调罗马帝国势力经历动荡后反而越加强盛。
地上的兽有两角如同『羔羊』,说话却像龙。他是蒙骗信徒的膺品(宗教和经济的媒介)。他是推动君王崇拜的假先知,甚至是信仰群体中的假先知。他还借着神迹奇事,以及提供或封杀经济网络来威迫利诱人拜海兽。
『兽与圣徒争战并且得胜』必然意味有一些圣徒真的受害殉道。无论如何圣徒当坚守和见证真道,不能看事物的表象,而是需要忍耐和信心。
罗马帝国的势力和影响,贯穿在生活中每一个层面。若认同和服从帝国鼓吹的文化和宗教思想,在生活上就有一定的稳当和依靠。反之,就必须面对受排斥甚至迫害的危险。对坚守纯正信仰的信徒而言,这是一场艰难的仗!
作者要求读者认清罗马势力背后的源头以及其终极下场。这些认知让他们知道必须在百般艰苦中坚忍,并且远眺终极的胜利。
今天普世教会也受到来自『邪恶三位一体』的攻击。有切身的(逼迫),道德(妥协)、知识(假教导)。信徒所面对的处境所以严峻,不仅是在于迫害之权势与凶恶,也是在于其可以伪装成诱人的邀请和应许(权力、奇事与异能、经济网络和成果)。
这些都是魔鬼威迫利诱的手段,有政治和经济结构性质(16-17节),目的不外是蒙骗世人和信徒,使他们妥协削弱真理和真神的权柄,使他们不崇拜真正的主宰。信徒在逼迫中当忍耐到底,邪恶的帝国势力很快就会灭亡,因为神必审判邪恶,恶有恶报。
12的大红龙和13的二兽组成了『邪恶的三位一体』,从幽暗的根源延伸至政治/军事/经济的权势,甚至亵渎地染指宗教信仰的领域,目的不外是迷惑万民,威逼或诱惑神子民转而敬拜龙和兽。他们力量之强大,似乎有顺我者生,逆我者亡的威势。
但约翰在14所见的异象,却将13的局面完全扭转。真正的胜利是属于曾经被杀的羔羊及那些遭受迫害的跟从者。那看似得胜的权势,至终却在神的审判下无所遁形。
141-5将镜头带到积极的一面,一个天上的崇拜!这转变是从大红龙站在海边,到羔羊很坚固站在圣地;从殉教到锡安山、从不完全的666到完整的144,000;从兽的记号到羔羊和父的名。
约翰听到众水唱新歌,述说羔羊的得胜。144,000是忠心的信徒,羔羊宝血所买赎和得胜的基督的新妇。他们跟随羔羊左右,唯有他们会唱新歌,因为唯有他们领受了基督的拯救(以色列人出埃及,过红海后唱新歌)。
『基督在做收割』指到他的审判是激烈的,要彻底消灭邪恶的势力。真正叫人敬畏和配的荣耀的是那创造天地的主宰,而不是那妄自尊大的『邪恶三位一体』。神才是终极的审判主,人只有转向这位主宰才能免于审判。永远的福音的来源只有一个,就是神,不是罗马帝国或其君王所宣称的『福音』。
『巴比伦倾倒了』代表罗马政权,经济,文化社会,以及它背后的扭曲价值观要覆亡。拜兽和受兽印的,将会面对永生神的惩罚和永远的苦楚。人以为喝巴比伦淫乱之酒的是分享大城之利,不料却是招致那象征终极审判之神大怒的酒,以及硫磺火的苦楚。
天上的场景告诉我们,因着忠心于羔羊,原来被压迫及杀害的守道者才是至终的得胜者,而张狂的兽和贪图安稳的列国列民,却要永远受神的惩罚。
神对邪恶势力的审判和惩治,对那些在祭坛下呼喊的生命而言,是慈爱的最具体表现;对那些因为勇敢持守和执着真善美而遭恶势力破坏的人,神审判恶人带来莫大的安慰。
神的审判信息所投射的,是宇宙世界更远大的憧憬和盼望:光明必然战胜黑暗。这个异象和憧憬,叫亚细亚的七个教会和众教会的信徒得着坚忍和持守信仰的力量。

Sitting at the Feet of Jesus

Luke 10:38-42
Mary Sitting 
at the Feet of Jesus
Jesus and his disciples arrived at Bethany, a village near Jerusalem, where Martha, Mary and Lazarus lived. They were good friends of Jesus and they welcomed these preachers of the Word warmly into their house.
Martha was busy with food preparation as she desired to serve the needs of others. She felt frustrated and she approached Jesus with her complain, “Mary is just sitting there listening to your words. Why don’t you bother about this? Tell her to help me, please!
How then did Jesus reply?
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Jesus corrected Martha for being too occupied with her table serving, for she was worried and upset about many things. He commended Mary for making the right choice to sit under His feet and to listen to His teaching.
Jesus said this to teach those who offer their hospitality to ministers of God, that they ought to differentiate between what is urgent and important, and what is not. Jesus emphasized that the ultimate purpose of fellowship for believers should focus on God and His Word. God’s Word must be preached and heard. This is a good model of fellowship and ministry for the community of faith.
There Must Be 
a Balance between 
Busy Serving and Listening to God’s Word
Martha said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” (v.40b)
Martha made “I” as her prime concern in her conversation with Jesus. She did not put her focus on the Lord Jesus Christ. Though Martha had addressed Jesus as her Lord, somehow, she still murmured over His failure in meeting her needs. Instead of listening to Jesus, Martha commanded Jesus to do and say as she wished.
Jesus reminded Martha that a prophet had come to her house with the Word of God. The primary focus of the host should then be attending to and serving the prophet by listening to His words and not to be busy with her house chores. God desires us to receive Him by drawing near to Him and by listening to His Word attentively, just like how Mary did by sitting at the feet of Jesus.
In the context of the Gospel of Luke, ‘sitting at one’s feet’ means submitting to one’s authority. God wants to bless those who receive Him by sitting at His feet. Jesus diverted their focus from serving, as a community lifestyle, to receiving the grace of God.
Martha liked to serve while Mary loved to listen and ponder upon the Word of God. Both of them were Jesus’ disciples, and they loved Jesus dearly. However, those who are occupied with ministering and serving must guard themselves well, so that they do not ignore the importance of feeding themselves with the Word of God or drawing near to Him.
Sometimes, a conspicuous ministry which draws attention as well as applauses from the crowd tends to draw us away from God too. We end up neglecting God and we refuse to think in line with His Word. In such situations, whatever we do become self-serving rather than serving God and His Word. Worse still, we overlook God’s sovereignty above all.
There are issues which can be settled later in the midst of our busy schedule. There is a time for ministry and there is a time for us to listen to the Word of God. We must balance our serving with listening, meditating and getting deeper into the Word of God. We need to guard ourselves against the possibility of missing out the abundant grace that God has in store for us. It is because we usually sacrifice our personal times with God and forget to rely on Him fully when we are too occupied with our work.
Men and women in the business world enrol themselves in MBA courses so that they can advance their career. For us who serve God, there is a need for us to constantly quiet our hearts before God in order to listen, meditate and learn the Word to be equipped further in His truth.
We will experience burnt out situations quickly in our spiritual walk and come to our bottleneck if we focus merely on our ministries and lack in listening, learning and studying the Word of God. God is not pleased with such a serving model.
Why not Examine 
Own Self First?
The narrator projected Martha as someone who was over-concerned for others. She questioned Mary’s priority in life, and she expected Mary to flow in line with her ideal way of serving. She complaint to Jesus about Mary, and asked Him to uphold justice by commanding Mary to rise and give her a hand.
Nevertheless, Jesus pointed out Martha indeed was at fault. She was worried and upset about many things. Hence, she was unable to concentrate on listening to the Word of the Lord, and was distracted in her worship as well.
Jesus once shared a parable of seeds sowing. When seeds are sowed among thorns which stand for worries and anxieties of this life, the growth and fruits-bearing are halted (8:14). Jesus also warned His disciples to get rid of worrying about what to eat and what to wear on earth. All the worries of this life become a barrier to men when they want to focus on seeking God’s kingdom (12:22; 21:34).
Jesus knew Martha intended to do everything in order to serve Him, but she did not receive Him nor listen to Him wholeheartedly. God was not at the centre of her life. In view of this, what made Martha different from Mary was not because she was busy with work while Mary was sitting there listening to Jesus. The distinction was about Martha’s distraction and Mary’s concentration.
Jesus said whoever obeyed His Word were truly His servants and whoever followed Him wholeheartedly would inherit the kingdom of God. Therefore, Mary had the right attitude whereas Martha was to change her response to God.
We might be concerned about criticizing others without considering our own deeds. What have we done for God? Do we do the right thing? Why do we do it?
Martha was called to serve the table, yet she also spent most of her energy criticizing others. There are people who do so little in church but are enthusiastic in airing their opinions and being critical and judgmental towards those who serve. They do not realize that they are indeed wrong while others might be doing the right things. A community will not be effective if too much time is spent by people scrutinizing and judging one another.
People who only bother to look outwardly but unwilling to look within themselves are inclined to see a world full with injustice and ugliness. They will automatically see themselves victimized. They complaint, “Why should I keep my hands clean when everybody does evil?”
They raise more and more questions and they start rationalizing their faults. They end up deceiving themselves to be the righteous ones, so that their conscience will not be troubled.
We should be aggressive in our self-reflection and be willing to be responsible for our actions. We have to be strict in self-discipline while be lenient to others.
What are you complaining now?
Do you feel that you have lost your peace and your joy, and you are defiant and everything seems to be loathsome in your eyes?
What you need to do is to sit down and do a self-searching. You might have a wrong expectation of others or you might have an attitude problem of over-concerning about others’ businesses. Let’s get our emotion right and do our part faithfully. By so doing, you will be a happier man or woman on earth!
Do Silly Things for Jesus
In the ancient society where Jesus lived, people expected women to play the role and responsibility of serving their guests and making them feel at home. Martha’s complaint seemed to be reasonable under the expectation of such a culture. What Mary did, signified a breakthrough in their tradition – to sit down and to listen to Jesus. Jewish women had no right to access to proper education.
Yet, Mary loved the Lord and she hungered for Him. She set her heart to want to hear the Word of the prophet as a way of receiving Him personally. She owned no significant ministry, yet she was blessed to take her bold step to break free from the bondage of Jewish tradition, and became then a silent witness for Christ.
Martha was trapped in the bondage of tradition where people thought that women were supposed to occupy themselves in serving others.
Jesus did not completely deny her worries and upset, but He considered Mary’s desire for His Word and the fact that she did listen to Him attentively, to be something better (v. 42). It was something that could not be taken away by their social value and expectation.
Indirectly, Jesus set women free from their role which was defined and confined by their culture. He enabled the role and position of the women to be enhanced.
The power of the Gospel breaks every boundary! Those who hunger for God and those who love God must break free from fear of being demeaned and doubted in order to accomplish a new thing for the Lord. The Holy Spirit shall give us grace and strength as we move a step forward.

福音大能改变一切



路加福音18:15-30
婴孩与富有的官长
在两千年前耶稣的时代,犹太人普遍上期盼『神的国』来到,那时期称为『末后的日子the age to come。到时神将差派『弥赛亚』来,带领以色列战胜所有敌对的势力。接着神就亲自统治以色列,而世界万邦都要来朝拜神和尊以色列为大。
路加福音》十七20-21记载有法利赛人来问耶稣:『神的国什么时候来到呢?』
耶稣回答:『神的国来到,不是眼睛看得见的。人也不能说,‘看哪,在这里!或说,在那里’!因为神的国在你们中间。』
耶稣要指出,神的国;这末后的日子,已经开始了!
当福音传开的时候,福音的大能将使软弱者得刚强,叫卑微者得高升,神的国会临在这破碎,忧患和沉沦的世界。路加从1815节往下,继续阐明神的子民如何迎接或参与神的国的来临。
福音大能改变生命
十八章15-17节记载有人抱着婴孩来到耶稣面前,要他抚摸他们。门徒看见就责备那些人,耶稣却叫他们过来,说:『让小孩子到我这里来,不要禁止他们,因为神的国正属于这样的人。我实在告诉你们,凡不像小孩子一样接受神的国的,决不能进去。』
路加强调抱着婴孩,是强调人当微弱和无助,好像婴孩那样。在母亲怀中吃奶的婴孩,会紧紧抓住母亲,凝视母亲的眼神和笑容在牙牙学语。他是软弱无能。他不能自持任何力量。他是完全依赖父母亲。
路加强调透过单单依靠神的恩典进入神的国。我们自己任何的努力或功德或优越,都无法帮助我们进入神的国。下文18-23节接着说:
有一个富有的官长来问耶稣:『良善的老师,我当作什么,才可以承受永生呢?』
耶稣对他说:『你为什么称我是良善的呢?除了神一位以外,没有良善的。诫命你是知道:不可奸淫,不可杀人,不可偷盗,不可做假证供,当孝敬父母。』
他说:『这一切我从小都遵守了。』
耶稣听了,就告诉他:『你还缺少一件,应当变卖一切所有的,分给穷人,你就必定有财宝在天上,而且你还要来跟从我。』
官长听见这话,非常忧愁,因为他十分富有。他拥有优越条件。
耶稣看着他就说:『有钱财的人进神的国,可真难啊!骆驼穿过针眼,比财主进入神的国还容易呢!』(24-25节)
耶稣不是提倡仇富,而是针对那些“在神以外拥有的优越感或安全感”的人。这些优越感或安全感来自,譬如:财富、宗教名声、身份地位、侍奉经验,知识,爱情,事业成就等。这些“外在好东西”已经成为他们“功能性的救主”,使他们觉得若是失去了这些东西就不能幸福活下去。
这位官长也是一位年轻人。他年轻、富有和地位显赫。虽然他在众人心目中那么的优越和蒙福,他仍然感到人生不完满,又对是否得救感到焦虑,因此前来请教耶稣。他很崇敬耶稣,称他是良善的老师。但他最终拒绝了耶稣的呼召,因为他放不下他的财富。他的财富成了他生命的“偶像”,叫他远离真正的救主。
财富、身份地位、知识、爱情、事业成就等都是美好的东西,渴慕和追求它们并没有错,然而,当我们把它们当成是人生终极目标,取代了真正的救主,就中了魔鬼的诡计!
这些东西为假神 “假神不能赦免人的罪、不能满足人内心的渴求,给人活着的意义。人反而会受到它们所奴役。
当人认为一定要拥有它才会幸福,若出现任何事物威胁它,人就会感觉极度焦虑;若有人拦阻你拥有它,你就万分生气;若你无法达成它,世人无法原谅你,你自己也不原谅自己。
其次,你若真的达成它,它却无法带给你所期待的满足感。不仅如此,它甚至可加剧你心里头的空虚。难怪许多世人敬仰的成功人士,在人生高峰的时候出现忧郁、沮丧,甚至了结自己的生命。
那么我们如何能够领受神的国,活出蒙福、踏实和有意义的生命呢?
答案是:承认自己是无能和软弱,好像婴孩那样;放下我们生命中的偶像,单单抓住耶稣基督我们生命真正的救主。
耶稣基督本来是富有和尊贵,永恒三一神的圣子。他拥有无穷尽的荣耀、丰盛、爱和喜乐,却自愿舍弃一切成了极度贫穷钉死在十字架上,代替我们受罪的惩罚,为了要得着我们、拯救我们、爱我们,给予我们丰盛的生命。
耶稣的救赎恩典是白白的也是最昂贵的,是我们无法靠自己努力赚取的。这位为你舍弃一切,拯救你的耶稣,今天呼召你放下一切,变成婴孩般的软弱,单单依赖他,跟从他,与他连结。
有基督作我们生命的中心,所有外在东西的得与失,已经不能影响我们,叫我们被苦毒、愤怒和沮丧吞噬,或叫我们活着如过山车那样起落摇摆,无所适从。耶稣是唯一的救主,得到他你就会真正的满足。在变化莫测,逆境或顺境,耶稣要作你生命的定海神针。若你在某些事上叫他失望,他也会饶恕你。
今天你的生命是追逐诸多的偶像,或受到罪中之乐捆绑?或是交托给基督,与他连结?你的生命是充满喜乐平安满足祷告感恩?或是迷失、焦虑、空虚、苦毒或不安,因为失去了宝贵的东西?
无论发生什么事,纵然失去一切,我还有基督啊!当臣服在耶稣基督十字架前,思想他拯救你牺牲的爱。透过每天读经和祷告,参加教会的崇拜和小组生活,使自己持续与主连结,住在基督里面。
我们生命唯一的主,耶稣基督应许圣灵会充满你,给你得安息,喜乐和满足,帮助你活出自由,远离罪的丰盛的生命。
福音大能改变世界
28-30节,彼得对耶稣说:『你看,我们已舍弃自己所有的,跟从你了!』
耶稣说:『我实在告诉你们,谁为神的国撇下房子、妻子、兄弟、父母、儿女,没有不在今生得到许多倍,在来世the age to come得到永生的。』
神的国已经开启了!我们这跟从耶稣,真心信靠基督的人,要依靠圣灵的大能去爱神和爱人如己。我们要以崭新的神国价值观来过团契生活,在地上为神的国临在努力做工。
旧的世界价值和建制被翻转;我们信靠耶稣的群体教会,有了新的家,新的家庭成员。我们当彼此接纳和饶恕,彼此服侍,互爱互助,过无私的生活,共享新的机遇。我们今天可以活出这种在末后的日子,神的国的美好。世人看见就被吸引加入,一起活出神国新世界。
有人会反对说,这样无私大爱、公义、共存共荣的群体生活,是不可能发生的。或者有人说,这里不行,另外的那间教会就可以做到啦。我们是卑微和软弱的人,但福音的大能可以改变一切,叫神的国降临,人的生命和整个世界被翻转!
祈求神差圣灵浇灌我们,医治我们群体的破碎,更新我们的疲惫和软弱。圣灵也要赐给我们诸般的属灵恩赐,建立团队合作的服侍,同心做主工。我们不应该怀疑福音的能力,以及圣灵的工作。
我们反而要问:当神的国美丽新世界降临的时候,我在哪里?我是否参与在其中?我是否好像耶稣讲的比喻里的那位寡妇,坚持争取神国公义来到?耶稣说:人子来的时候,在世上找得到这种信心吗(十八8)?
正确的态度是:成功不必在我,但成功要有我。
应用
今天你是否好像婴孩那样,紧紧抓住神,情愿放下那些叫你远离神的东西,包括不良的习惯;或是藏在阴暗处的罪;或是提供你安全感的好东西?
今天你或许不幸的失去了工作职位或做生意的收入;失去了爱情或升学机会,失去了旁人的肯定或至爱的人。你不必惧怕、焦虑或愤怒,因为你还有基督!
基督拥有天上地下最高的权柄和丰盛,在基督里,我们是有盼望的!透过每天与主亲近,读经祷告,服侍主,我们持续与基督连接。他会带领你走过死阴的幽谷,他恩典是够你用的。有基督便足够!
我们这信仰群体走到今天,经历了许多光辉岁月,也有倒退,卡在瓶颈的地方。或许不少人要留在安逸区,或是惧怕资源不足以应付,因此不愿再作出新的尝试,为主开拓福音事工。神说,不是依靠势力,不是才能,乃是依靠我的灵方能成事。
我们当做好准备工夫,做好自己的本分,上帝就会亲自来补足我们不足够的部分。我们要彼此包容和饶恕,凡事以恩典待人,有多的补足那些缺乏。我们全体一心,起来传福音给非信徒,也提供社会关怀为社区带来实质的建设。
福音的大能会持续改变我们的生命,翻转我们周遭的世界,乃是超乎我们的想象!
